UtahPolitics.org Style Guide

This page discusses rules for UtahPolitics.org authors and gives some style guidance.

Rules

The rules are few in number and simple:

  1. Each story needs to have a Utah connection that's fairly conspicuous.
  2. New topics are fine. The ones on the left navigation bar are only placeholders.
  3. No personal attacks in articles.
  4. We reserve the right to edit for function (links), grammar, and spelling.
  5. In extreme circumstances, we reserve the right to pull an article, but we won't change it.

Style Guide

The following offer guidance on style. Following these style guides will make UtahPolitics.org easier to read and easier to maintain. UtahPolitics.org makes use of CSS, so there are some specific HTML styles that are useful.

  1. Use meaningful titles. Try to keep them short enough to fit on one line which means not more than 30-40 characters.
  2. Authors should be acknowledged for articles by enclosing the author's name and an optional link inside an <h3/> tag:
    <h3>by <a href="http://www.windley.com">Phil Windley</a></h3>

If you're posting an anonymous article, its a good idea to put "by Anonymous" for the attribution or people will mistakenly think the poster is the author.
  3. Quoted material from online sources should include a URL link.
  4. Events should be identified by prepending "Event:" to the title. No author attribution is needed for events or other general announcements.
  5. Articles longer than 3 or 4 short paragraphs should be entered with just the first paragraph "Entry Body" textbox and the remainder of the article should be put in the "Extended Entry" textbox.
