Mitt's Big Day

Romney kicked off his presidential “exploration” with an extraordinary fund raising event, raising $6.5 million in one day. Over 400 supporters hit the phones and emailed friends on Monday from the Boston Convention Center. Plenty of Utahns flew back for the event. I got emails from several. I made a donation.

While the total is impressive, I can’t find any reports of the number of donors. That’s the more important number, in my book. How many people are willing to part with something tangible to show support. If you can even get people to give a few dollars, they feel much greater ownership than mere verbal commitments. Since the legal limit is $2100, we know that at least 3000 people donated, but it’s probably much greater than that—I’d guess three to four times which puts it over 10,000 individual donors. That’s not bad for one day.

What is up with Utahns' intense interest (I won't say obsession, which is reserved for Lavarr Webb) in Mitt Romney? Is it because he's LDS? If so, wouldn't that be focusing on his religion, the same thing -- only in reverse -- that people have been criticized for who say they won't vote for a Mormon? Just a thought, but I admit that I'm just waaaay too sick of reading about Mitt over on UtahPolicy.com...

I think it's too simplistic to say that its *just* because he's LDS, although that plays an important role. In a more general sense, Mitt Romney feels like one of Utah's own. Take the Olympics, his families ties here, his house in Deer Valley--all of that adds up to make him feel like a native son. Utah has never had and will likely not have in the foreseeable future someone so close who has as good a shot. So, people are interested.

As for LaVarr, I can't say, obviously, but if nothing else, it's probably good business for him. After all, you mentioned his name and his URL. Not bad...
