Political Blogging in Utah
UtahPolitics.org, OneUtah.org, and Obiter Dicta were featured on a radio show at KNPR. Myself, Cliff Lyon (OneUtah.org), and Steve Petersen (Obiter Dicta) were the guests. Steve has a summary if you don’t want to listen to the whole show (about 30 minutes).
Dave Berns, the host, did a good job of asking questions that poked at the soft spots. He poked Cliff and I on the “can you write things critical of the LDS church?” That was pretty easy for both of us since I don’t criticize the church and feel no need to and Cliff isn’t LDS.
Dave poked Steve pretty hard on the “citizen journalist vs. professional journalist” question. Steve did a good job of distinguishing between what bloggers do and what newspapers do.
We ran out of time, but given chance to respond to that I would have made the point that talking about Utah politics isn’t my job—it’s my hobby. I don’t owe anyone anything. I have opinions; I support candidates. You can read what I write or not—suit yourself.
The best thing about blogging though is that I can do this. Write in my own voice and say what I want without having a formal media outlet, without anyone’s permission, with no filtering, and no space limits.
