Mother-In-Law Apartments
Orem is causing a stir by cracking down on so-called “mother-in-law” apartments. By experience, I’ve become a fan of strong city planning and thus I’m not very sympathetic to the proliferation of illegal apartments. I know that many people in Utah feel otherwise because they have a classic “I own this land, I’ll do anything I want with it” mentality. What’s your opinion on city planning and why?

Wow...Dan will love this one.
I'm pretty libertarian and am on the side of those who feel they should be able to do what they want with their property...as long as it doesn't hurt others physically or financially.
Planning is often needed to keep harm from being done...but it should be done with a very soft touch.
It doesn't surprise me that you would be a "fan of strong city planning". Your support for Utopia strengthens your technocrat credentials. I think it is good that in Utah there is healthy debate between the two extremes on the issue of planning.
In many places the property rights view is completely ignored by those who feel they know what is best for everyone else (the planners). In Utah there are still some rugged individualists who keep the nannies honest. I think that's a good thing that benefits all Utahns.
