Voting Reminder

Remember to check your calendar to see if you’re going to be away on June 27th—primary election day. If so, get an absentee ballot or find out how to vote early.

Speaking of voting, this will be your first chance to check out the new electronic voting machines. Joe Demma, Lt. Governor Herbert’s Chief of Staff was in Mississippi last week to learn from their experience. Apparently, it wasn’t that good.

I was quoted in an article on electronic voting in the Daily Herald yesterday. I don’t think he captured the reason many people are so opposed to this. For example:

“These machines do seem to terrify some people,” said Sandy Hoffmann, elections coordinator for Utah County. “I don’t see any need for that terror.

“I think it’s the unknown, and change. I’m sure this is old stuff rehashing itself in a new technology.”

The people who are most concerned aren’t a bunch of computer phobics, but computer security experts. That’s hardly “old stuff rehashing itself in new technology.” Actually, quite the opposite.

This is the first time—ever—that there has been an entire discipline devoted to the security of the technology that our voting system was based upon. There were are no optical scan security experts, for example. I think, rather, it’s people like Hoffman’s lack of expertise in this area that makes her so sanguine.

"I think, rather, it’s people like Hoffman’s lack of expertise in this area that makes her so sanguine."

Amen.

Heaven help us.
