Congressman Matheson's Veterans' Day Message

Dear Fellow Utahn[s],

As we prepare to commemorate the 52nd anniversary of Veterans Day, I want to share with you information regarding important veterans issues.

Veterans Day was chosen to commemorate World War I, which ended on Nov. 11, 1918. President Eisenhower, in 1954, changed what was known as “Armistice Day” to “Veterans Day”. There are currently about 25 million living veterans. Each year, about 80,000 veterans are buried in one of the cemeteries of the National Cemetery system.

Just this week, I visited with some injured soldiers who are recovering at Walter Reed Army hospital here in Washington D.C. I am inspired by their stories of heroism and by their determination to get well and return to their unit. They motivate me to ensure that as a Congressman, I keep the promises we made to them when we asked them to serve and to sacrifice.

I believe we can never say thank you enough to the extraordinary men and women who wear our country’s uniform. On this Veterans Day, I salute their commitment to duty and to country. We are in their debt.

Sincerely,

Jim Matheson Member of Congress
