Hatch Supports Torture Exemption

Sen. John McCain, a former prisoner of war, has proposed legislation that would ban torture as an valid instrument in the war on terror. Vice President Dick Cheney has proposed a CIA exception to that ban. Our own Sen. Orrin Hatch supports Cheney’s exemption:

Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, said he supports the vice president’s efforts to gain a CIA exemption. While contending that the administration opposes torture, Hatch said, “They’re going to everything in their power to make sure that our citizens in the United States of America are protected.”

I can understand the reaction that we ought to do anything to save American lives and I’ve fought with myself about this over the years. Ultimately, however, I’ve come to the conclusion that I cannot condone torture. I do think we can debate exactly what torture is. For example, is depriving someone of sleep torture? Nevertheless, I think there has to be a bright line that we do not cross.

Orrin’s wrong on this. He ought to be a moral compass in the Senate and he’s not in this case.
