Caring for Taxpayers

CARE for Orem is an organization supporting the new sales that would give one cent of every $10 spent in Orem to the arts. From the organization’s Web site:

Welcome to the website of CARE (Cultural Arts and Recreation Enrichment). We’re dedicated to passing a one-tenth of one percent (one penny on $10.00) sales tax increase on November 8, 2005 which will be used exclusively for recreation and cultural arts in Orem. We believe this additional $1.6 million per year will greatly enrich our quality of life in Orem now and in the future.

Now, this doesn’t sound like much, but you have to wonder why, in a city as big as Orem, there isn’t more direct support for the arts. After all, if there are enough people who want to go to museums, plays, and what not and pay money for them, they hardly would need to pick the pockets of taxpayers to build them. The fact that a cause is “good” can’t be enough of a reason to justify taking money from your neighbors to pay for it. Where should local government draw the line on what they should spend taxpayer dollars on and what they should not?
