Utah Gas Tax Reprieve

From KCPW:

State leaders are considering lifting Utah’s gas tax to give consumers a reprieve from rising fuel prices. Utah Governor Jon Huntsman tells KCPW radio, “I’m open to any option that would alleviate the burden that is now being carried by so many consumers in the form of high gas prices. It’s not right for consumers and something’s got to be done about it.”

A gas-tax moratorium would require Huntsman to call a special session of the legislature. Senate President Jon Valentine tells KCPW given the state’s one hundred million dollar budget surplus, the idea should get widespread support from lawmakers. Valentine tells KCPW he’s already called Governor Huntsman and House Speaker Greg Curtis to initiate the process. Nevada lawmakers are currently considering a similar tax moratorium and some other states have already passed them.

Personally, I think this is a bad idea. The market is sending signals that oil is in short supply and people ought to conserve more and the government’s going to take steps to lessen it. If the legislature feels compelled to give a tax refund, just do a refund and let me spend the money on whatever I want.
