106th VFW National Convention In SLC, UT

The 106th Veterans of Foreign Wars National Convention will be held in Salt Lake City, Utah August 20 through the 25, 2005. This month’s issue of VFW magazine has a full page advertisement about the “pristine views of the mountains and clean western air” and an adjacent registration form. The ad also describes SLC as “big-city cosmopolitan meets alpine resort.”

Recently, speakers at past National Conventions have included scores of mayors, numerous governors, a variety of congressmen, Secretary of Defense William Cohen, Governor Bob Taft (Ohio), Secretary of State Colin Powell, Senator (and Presidential candidate) John Kerry, Vice-President Al Gore, and President George W. Bush. The guest speakers have not yet been identified for the Salt Lake Convention; however, while talking with Representative Matheson (D-UT, 2nd) at the Hinckley Institute of Political Science (after the forum with Senate Minority Leader Harry Reed (D-NV)), I was told that arrangements are being worked out that will likely result in Representative Matheson being one of the speakers to the veterans’ group.
