eVoting Troubles in Florida

Poor Florida just can’t win. Recently the Miami-Dade Election Reform Coalition, a citizen’s group, requested all data from the 2002 gubernatorial primary between Democratic candidates Janet Reno and Bill McBride. What they found was that computer crashes in 2003 erased information from the September 2002 gubernatorial primaries and other elections. Of course, none of this was released voluntarily by the Florida government. Critics of those who are skeptical of the security and reliability of eVoting frequently try to make the case that these are “doomsday scenarios.” In other words, these problems are rare and not likely to affect real elections. This incident shows just how dangerous that kind of thinking is.
