Is Hatch Wavering On Stem Cell Research?

by Ed Partridge

In response to the announcement that Ron Reagan will make a speech in support of stem cell research at the Democratic National Convention, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer is reporting that Senator Orrin Hatch said:

“I hope he reconsiders. If they make a political thing out of this, we are going to set stem cell research back a long way.”

Is this the first sign that Hatch is bowing to the inevitable pressure from his conservative Republican constituents to reconsider his stance on this political hot-potato of a sensitive issue?

Or, is this a thinly veiled threat?
