UTOPIA Alternative
by Daniel Bergman
I first heard about “Utopia” 2 years ago. At the time, I was very involved with the industry, so I made a few phone calls, and spoke with someone who was working closely on the proposal. He explained the services to me, as well as the approach they were taking.
At the time, I felt that a different approach would be more advantageous and almost necessary to lay the ground work for a fiber optic network.
I believe a wireless solution would be less expensive and would provide the State with an initial “test run.” Which, could be an invaluable factor for decisions on similar future proposals.
I have been engineering a system for the last 5 years. Not for the State, and not for “Utopia.” I was planning on introducing it myself a year from now. But at this point, our economy can’t afford a multimillion dollar mistake with “Utopia.” The thought of it has me fairly alarmed, seems the best thing for me to do now, is to speak up. So without divulging too much, here are a few key points in my plan:
- The service is unique, it was developed around the idea of providing the consumer a free always-on wireless connection
- The equipment being considered for the service is very inexpensive
- The service actively promotes local business
- One year projection on return of investment
“Utopia’s” not a terrible idea, it just needs a little push along the way.
