News from the Campaign

2nd Congressional District Map (PDF)
The Deseret News had two nicely done pieces by Bob Bernick on John Swallow and Tim Bridgewater. I don’t live in the 2nd district, but I think the acrimony surrounding supporters of these two candidates comes down to the fact that they are so much alike its hard for the average voter to tell the difference. You know the old saw about politics being worst where it matters least? That might be the most accurate summary of the 2nd District GOP race.

Meanwhile on the gubernatorial front, Jerry Spangler has back-to-back pieces on Nolan Karras and Jon Huntsman. See Jon and Nolan’s answers to the DNew’s 20-question questionnaire.

Larry Jensen sent in this photo of a mobile billboard that Karras has deployed at point of the mountain. Some Huntsman are decrying the stoop to negative campaigning. I think the debate over negative campaigning has nearly reached preposterous proportions. Let’s face it, every challenger candidate (and I think its clear from recent polling that Karras is a challenger) has to find a wedge issue. Huntsman’s wealth and lack of state government experience is clearly a legitimate issue in this campaign. This brings that into focus in a short sound bite. I think its masterful.

Meanwhile, the Salt Lake Tribune has an article on the open-space initiative that will be on the ballot this fall. The initiative, which has a broad coalition behind it, “would allow Utah voters to approve a $150 million bond for the purchase and preservation of open space and other critical lands. ”
