Matheson Picks Hale

The presumptive Democratic nominee for Governor, Scott Matheson, picked State Senator Karen Hale as his running mate. I’m anxious for the Republicans to pick a candidate on Saturday so we can get down to the real race. Matheson had the following to say:

“She is universally admired and respected and liked in the Legislature,” said Matheson.

But apparently, the feeling isn’t mutual since Hale, just a few sentences later had this to say:

In an interview, Hale criticized the Legislature as “really retreating from education and I think it should be just the opposite.”

She said a perception has grown among educators and the public that the Legislature is “the enemy” as they issue mandates about curriculum and operations, emphasize the need to invest tax dollars in private schools and deride teachers.

Neither Hale nor Matheson support vouchers or tuition tax credits which is going to cause some grief for them with voters. I get the feeling that most voters in Utah do support both of these, although I’m not convinced that most voters know why they support them.
