Rocky: Utopia Leads to Obesity

by Harold Carr

C|NET quotes Rocky as saying:

“I just don’t see the social good in using taxpayer money to fund a network that provides more television and bandwidth for illegally downloading files”

He doesn’t seem to understand that more and more of us work for non-Utah companies out of our home-offices, bringing tax dollars to Utah and the cities we live in. For us, good connectivity is essential. The same technology that enables us to work remotely also allows our jobs to be offshored to China, India, etc. In order to compete with other countries for IT jobs we need a lower cost of living (which Utah has) and good, high-bandwidth connectivity.

C|NET also quotes Rocky as saying:

“We should spend money on getting people fit, rather than deteriorating their quality of life with higher bandwidth to surf the Net.”

I have zero commute time (compared to the 60 minutes each direction when I lived in Silicon Valley). I use that time saving to exercise, read, spend time with friends. In other words, enjoying a higher quality of life.

In general, I like what Rocky has been up to as mayor, but he really seems to miss the boat on UTOPIA.
