Read My Lips

by Phil Windley

I’ve found my way onto the email list for the Huntsman campaign and yesterday they sent me an email calling attention to a press release from the middle of December. At any rate, the subject of the press release was Huntsman Calls for No Budget Increase with the subtitle: We must grow our economy, not our government. The press release was short and really just took a pot shot at Gov. Walker for her proposed 3.4% tax increase.

This sort of statement by a candidate is predictable. Its harder to understand, particularly in a three paragraph press release exactly what Huntman would do to solve the problem. As I’ve pointed out before, Utah faces some really touch choices over the next decade. Huntsman’s short answer: grow the economy, but that’s easier said than done.

Don’t get me wrong, I think Huntsman has to say “don’t raise taxes.” But I want to see more than simplistic solutions. Governor Walker has at least proposed something concrete and she’s done so after years of government service and having a clear understanding of the realities of the situation. The least the other candidates can do, if they disagree with her position, is to present proposals that are equally concrete and realistic.
